What is Hip Impingement?
Hip impingement is an instance in which the femoral head makes contact with the acetabulum causing a painful pinching feeling in the front of the hip area. This can be accompanied by lack of range of motion or a stiff feeling. This approximation of the femoral head and acetabulum can damage the labrum or lead to arthritis. There are 2 different types of impingement including Cam which is a bony outgrowth on the femoral head that makes contact with the acetabulum. The second type is a pincer deformity which is a bony overgrowth of the acetabulum that can make contact with the head of the femur. These can occur by themselves or in unison creating a further restricted joint.
Common causes of hip impingement:
- Present since birth
- Repetitive use in areas beyond normal ROM
- Tight musculature
Treatment
-A thorough and detailed evaluation
-Treatment of injured soft tissues (dry needling, A.R.T, class IV laser, IASTM and cupping)
-Restore joint mobility and increase range of motion
-Strengthen and stabilize (DNS and exercise rehabilitation)
