What is IT Band Syndrome?

Iliotibial Band Syndrome is when the IT band gets irritated and inflamed at two points. This occurs when the IT band rubs against the greater trochanter of the femur or the lateral epicondyle of the femur. The IT band traverses down the lateral aspect of the thigh from the hip to the knee. Lateral knee and hip pain can result from this irritation and inflammation and can be slow in onset progressing from a dull ache to a sharp pain.

Common causes of ITB syndrome:

  • Repetitive use
  • Improper movement patterns
  • Hill or uneven surface running
  • Internal tibial torsion
  • Genu varum

Treatment

-A thorough and detailed evaluation

-Treatment of injured soft tissues (dry needling, A.R.T, class IV laser, IASTM and cupping)

-Restore joint mobility and increase range of motion

-Strengthen and stabilize (DNS and exercise rehabilitation)
