What is shoulder bursitis?

Shoulder bursitis is a painful condition caused by the inflammation of a bursa in your shoulder. A bursa is a small, fluid-filled sac that help cushion and decrease friction of the muscles, bones and tendons near a joint. There are multiple bursae in the shoulder, but it most commonly affects the subacromial bursa and is also common in shoulder impingement.

Types of Bursitis

There are typically three types of bursitis:

-Chronic bursitis can be gradual and is typically caused by over-use or repetitive stress and can cause swelling, tenderness and pain.

-Traumatic bursitis, typically caused by a specific event or direct blow to the bursa with a rapid onset of pain and swelling.

-Infectious bursitis is when the bursa becomes infected and can feel excessive warmth in the area and feel sick, feverish and tired. It is very important to get immediate medical attention for infectious bursitis.

Treatment:

-A thorough and detailed evaluation

-Treatment of injured soft tissues (dry needling, A.R.T, class IV laser, IASTM and cupping)

-Restore joint mobility and increase range of motion

-Strengthen and stabilize (DNS and exercise rehabilitation)
